Going to the pier on her own was quite scary. There were so many people here, even though it was still morning. Today was Jas’ day off and she’d decided it would be good for her to go out and ‘mingle’. Or at least be among people. It was scary, but eventually, she had to if she wanted to get to know a few people around here. So far, she hadn’t even met her own neighbors yet, because she worked mostly during the day, and they seemed to be away in the evenings. She made a mental note to bake something nice, so she could present it to them over the weekend, maybe. A nice cake or something, and then invite them over for coffee. Yes, that was a lovely idea. Coffee.
The young woman stopped at a small coffee shop and purchased herself a nice cup of hot chocolate before she continued her way. The taste of the warm liquid was so rich and delicious; if only it didn’t make you so fat, Jas would’ve surely drank one every day. While she took another sip, she gazed at the large Ferris wheel ahead of her. A ride would be nice.
And so she went on there. Damn, it was a lot higher than she’d expected. At the highest point, she’d even clenched her hands tightly around the iron bars of the cage she sat in. Obviously, she wasn’t going to fall out of the thing – she hoped – but somehow, it was still nerve-wrecking and the woman was happy to be back on the ground. She shared the cage with three others; close friends, it seemed, because they were busily chatting and taking photos together. Jas watched the three women walk off in a different direction with a faint smile, but her eyes held a sadness. That must’ve been great, going out with friends like that. Quickly, Jas turned and walked the other way.
There was a new ride that Jas hadn’t yet tried before. She wasn’t a big fan of anything too scary, but this one was indoors and involved water. Probably not a really good idea to get on a watery ride in the winter, but despite that, Jas went for it anyway. The line was rather large, but since the boats had eight seats, the wait probably wouldn’t last that long. Jasmine got in the end of the line and waited, as patiently as she could.

The water sprite had ended up going to the pier alone, which she thought was a bit of a shame. Brent was still a bit too sick to go, and wouldn't have even if he wasn't sick. Pier. Water. He wasn't an idiot. ...Well, okay, he wasn't an idiot all the time. Point was, Brent didn't like water. Nope, Fire was his thing. Weird. But, okay. Chase was working. And, well, Bree didn't really know many other people well enough.
She wandered down to the pier, hands in the pockets of her jacket, the chilled air biting at any exposed skin. Not much skin was exposed, though; she wasn't stupid. It was winter now. She hated winter. It was way too cold for her liking. She was more of a springtime person, even if she had been born in winter. February 18th was winter, wasn't it? Yup.
Anyway, she didn't exactly know why she was headed out to the pier. Maybe it was because she was amazingly bored and needed stuff to do other than pore over her notebook and run the florist? Yeah, that seemed plausible. Could be that she was tired of only really knowing two people, though... she wasn't quite sure. She just needed to get out.
She arrived at the pier, taking in all the sights and sounds and smells and stuff. It was really quite a pretty place; especially set against the downcast sky. The sun was just beginning to set; shining of the water surrounding the pier and starting to turn everything into silhouettes. The large ferris wheel looked especially pretty against this backdrop. Too bad Bree didn't do heights.
She just stood for a moment, not really sure what to do first. Did she just have a wander around, get something to eat, or what? She didn't know. Maybe she could go check out a few rides? That sounded like a good idea. For now, anyway. She needed something to do, now that she was here and everything.
Oh, god, everything looked kind of scary. Call Bree a wimp, but there was no way she was getting on any of the loop-de-loops or drop rides or anything like that. They were just...no. The woman actually felt queasy just thinking about it. She hated that sort of thing so much. Ugh, just the thought of it...
She shuddered, shook her head and walked in the other direction of the big, scary rollercoaster that she'd been eyeing warily. She needed something different to do. A different ride. Something less...what was the word...something less "omigodi'mgoingtodie".
She spotted a recently opened water ride that she hadn't tried yet. And, oh man, even this ride looked kind of scary. But it was a water ride... Damnit. Never before had Bree been so conflicted. Well, okay, maybe she had, buuuuut... that had been different? Okay. Lame excuse. But still. Gah. It was too tempting.
She just stood looking at it for a few seconds, before sighing in defeat and joining the back of the long queue, behind a woman with raven hair who appeared to be alone. Well. At least Bree wasn't alone in that respect. Maybe she could strike up a conversation? After all, she needed to get to know more people in Honey Tree. "You on your own too?" she said to the woman, flicking her blonde curls out of her face.

It was likely Jasmine hadn’t felt this awkward before, although she was probably being a drama queen now. Just looking around at all the people, she was sure she was the only one by herself. She was also sure that everyone who laughed in the queu laughed at her, for that reason. That’s why she’d been staring at the ground for 8 minutes now – she checked her watch about every thirty seconds – since she’d joined the back of the line. If you can’t see it, it isn’t there, right? Jas liked to fool herself like that. It was way easier than facing the truth ahead of her anyway.
The queue moved forward slowly and for a brief moment, Jasmine glanced over her shoulder. No one had joined behind her yet, which was a bit of a relief. In front of her stood a large guy and Jasmine knew it shouldn’t matter and it surely wasn’t fair to him, but he somehow gave her the creeps. When they moved a little further again, he, too, glanced over his shoulder and smiled at her. And of course, Jas smiled back, before quickly averting her eyes to the ground again. Her heart pounded crazily; was this ever going to stop? She hated herself for this, because it was so irrational. It was just a guy. Half of the planet was inhabited with guys. She couldn’t freak out every time she ran into one. What if she was placed next to one on the ride? Oh God.. She actually just now realized that was a possibility. If possible, her heart started to beat even faster now; she could’ve sworn the pounding could be heard, if not seen on the outside.
Coming here wasn’t a good idea. Jas wasn’t ready for this. Not on her own, at least. It was too much stress, too much anxiety. And then and there, she decided to get out of the line and just return home, to recover from this ‘set-back’, because she truly considered it as such. She spun in her spot, but gasped softly as suddenly, someone was standing there behind her. A woman, with long, blonde hair. And she asked a question.
It took a little while before the words got through to Jasmine, almost as if her heartbeat affected her hearing, but when the woman realized she was taking a long time to answer, she instantly nodded and put a smile on her face. It must’ve looked a bit nervous though. “Yes. I.. uh..” And she nodded again. Was this girl by herself too? Jasmine tilted her head a slight bit, subconsciously. Someone like this girl, so beautiful and brave – because she dared to speak to Jas without knowing her – would surely have enough friends, wouldn’t she? Why would she be here on her own?
“Are you by yourself?” Jas questioned. Perhaps it was an obvious question, but she just had to be sure. Besides, the blonde maybe asked for a reason. Maybe she didn’t want to sit next to a guy either. Wow, that was a stupid thought. Jasmine almost rolled her eyes at herself, but then, she noticed the queue had moved again. Behind the blonde woman, more people had joined as well; leaving the line now was no longer a real option. Not if Jas wanted to stay unnoticed, which she would much prefer. So instead, she hurried and closed the gap between her and the rest. She then smiled at the blonde woman again. “Uhm.. Have you been on this ride before?” Honestly, Jas had no clue whether or not this was going to be a wild ride. She only hoped she’d made the right choice.

She was kind of wondering why the woman in front of her looked so...nervous. Maybe she was kind of like Bree? A rollercoaster...phobe? Meh, she didn't know. But one thing was certain; she looked...kind of uncomfortable? Oh, god, was she alright? And Bree had just said things without taking that into account. Maybe she didn't want to talk? Maybe she was shy? Damn, why'd she have to talk?!
The female turned around, just as Bree had finished speaking, and a small gasp had left her lips. God, Bree had surprised her. No no no no no. She hoped that she hadn't startled her too much. Oh, god, what if she had. Damn. "Sorry, I kinda came out of nowhere," she said, looking at her feet for a second. Ugh, why did she have to do this?
...Oh. Oh, the woman was smiling. Phew. It was a nervous smile, but a smile all the same. Bree automatically pushed her thoughts to one side and smiled straight back. It was just how she was; she didn't even have to think about it. Just a smile. That wasn't too hard to do, was it?
Okay, so she was by herself. Maybe striking up a conversation had been the right thing to do, after all? Yeah, most probably. Not many people liked being alone. But then, who knew? Maybe this woman liked her solitude? Oh, man, she didn't really know. The best thing to do would just be to keep talking.
She nodded, still smiling. "Yup! she confirmed, with a quick flourish of her hands. "Just me, I'm afraid." She snickered slightly at her own self-depriciating joke. But hey. Sometimes, you had to laugh at yourself. It was either that, or bursting into tears. Bree knew that better than most. She wished, oh, how she wished that she didn't. But...she did.
She shook her head, as much to clear her mind as to respond to the woman's question. "I...I haven't, actually," she admitted, picking at her nails a little bit. "It looked...uhm. Kindofscary?" She laughed a bit weakly, and shrugged it off. "What about you?"

Jasmine blinked her eyes for a moment. It did look kinda scary, indeed! Jasmine could only agree with this blonde woman on that. “I haven’t tried it either, I just thought..” She paused for a short moment and shrugged her shoulders. “I thought this looked least scary of all.” And then, she chuckled simply, at her own foolishness. After all, this was a water ride, so if she’d be dumb enough to tumble over into the water, she’d most likely drown; it surely wasn’t without risk. Then again, that was only a risk for the really stupid people. And although Jas wasn't very confident in herself, she had enough faith to know that was 'out of her league'.
Wasn’t it kind of ridiculous, for someone who was afraid of most of the rides out here to go to the pier and.. have fun? Jasmine’s idea of fun was usually reading a good book, playing the piano or simply daydream in a safe environment. Clearly, she tried to step out of her comfort zone here, but at this point, she could only hope and pray the outcome wouldn’t be too bad..
Slowly, Jas lifted her eyes to meet with the other woman’s orbs. Would it be a very bold thing to ask, if this blonde wanted to sit next to her on this ride? Maybe it was too soon. Maybe they had to get something else straight first, for instance their names. Oh, how silly, silly! That was the first thing to ask a person, instead of whether or not they’ve been on the new ride. Jas really had to keep these sort of things in mind, if she wanted to make friends.
Her smile turned into a shy one. “I’m Jasmine, by the way,” she said softly and kind of awkwardly held out her hand for the blonde woman to shake; that’s what people do when introducing themselves, she thought. Shaking hands. She hoped that her introduction would inspire the other to give her name as well.
“I haven’t been in town that long yet,” the raven-haired girl admitted, although she still doubted a bit whether or not it was smart to tell that to someone she’d just met. And then, she decided to just ‘take the leap’; if she wouldn’t ask, she’d never know and the next 20 minutes of waiting in this queue would be a real torture. “So, would you mind.. sitting next to me on the ride?” And she hoped, just hoped, that wouldn’t come across too stupid.

Bree nodded in agreement with the girl's words, snickering slightly. "Oh, god, tell me about it." she concurred, twirling a lock of her blonde hair around her finger. "For a pier, you'd think they'd have some easier rides." Kids liked the pier, didn't they? Well, Bree's little brother used to when he was a kid. Maybe they should have had rides that were easier for kids? But still. Kids were...kind of nutty, nowadays. Eh, Bree didn't really care right now.
A warm, gentle smile flitted across her face then. Jasmine. That was such a gorgeous name. It seemed that a ton of women in Honey Tree had flower names. This was the second one she'd come across, and she'd only been in Honey Tree for one or two months. She'd met a Lily, and now a Jasmine. And here Bree was, named after a type of cheese that she didn't even like that much. It'd actually earned her the title of "Cheddar" by her little brother. Brie and Cheddar. Hah. Funny, Freddie. Very funny.
"Jasmine." she repeated, letting her name roll around in her mind for a second, making the smile on her face wider. "That's gorgeous. My name's Bree. It's really, really nice to meet you." She took the hand that Jasmine had awkwardly extended toward her carefully, and shook it. Well, that was what you were supposed to do when you met someone new, wasn't it?
She nodded. "That's okay. I haven't been here long either, really." She shrugged, and put her hands back in her pockets to combat the freezing air. A month wasn't considered a long time, was it? She hoped not, or else she would have looked really stupid in saying that. Maybe it was better to not say that. Just in case. But still, to have the reassurance that you weren't the only newbie must have been nice.
"That sounds awesome, Jas!" Bree smiled, nodding. And then, oh god, she'd called her Jas. What if she didn't like being called Jas? Oh, god, she'd, uh...have to check that out? Damn. Right. Okay. "I can call you Jas, right?"

“I know!” Oh, perhaps that reaction was a little too enthusiastic, but it hadn’t yet happened that Jasmine found someone who agreed with her on this. Jasmine had always been a scardy-pants, or so she was told. So what she didn’t like the roller coasters that made her hang upside down; that was very unnatural anyway. A person wasn’t supposed to like that. Practically all her life, the woman had thought she was weird for feeling this, but it was always such a relief to find someone with a similar opinion. “It’s something I’ll probably never understand,” she added a bit more calmly, but still with a smile on her face. This blonde girl seemed nice, really nice.
As the blonde repeated her name, Jasmine felt herself blush a little. She’d never thought much of her own name. She liked it, in a way, but she felt there were far more special names out there. “Thank you,” she replied to Bree’s compliment softly. “I like Bree too, it’s original.” Honestly, the raven girl had no idea what that name could mean, but she always respected parents who took the time to find an interesting name for the children. As long as the names weren’t insulting in any way, that is. Originality rocks, but calling your child Apple or Cherry Blossom? No, no, no. The poor kid.
As Bree admitted she, too, only recently had come to this town, Jasmine’s eyebrows rose slightly. “Really? I’ve been here for.. three weeks, I think?” It had to be about three weeks now. “I was lucky I found myself a job so quickly, so I could afford a place to stay.” Although it wasn’t merely luck. Jas had quite a bit of experience selling clothes, so no wonder the manager of the store chose her over the other two girls, who were students and only tried to earn a little extra money. It was luck, though, that she came to town at the exact time that they were hiring. Still, the rent of her place was quite high, so she had to work her butt off to be able to afford it. For such a small little town as Honey Tree, Jas had hoped the rent would be a little lower. Oh well, there were worse things to have to deal with. “So, do you live alone?”
Bree’s reaction just made Jasmine smile. Okay, and blink a little bit, because honestly, she hadn’t expected the other girl to be so enthusiastic about it, but it was a good surprise. Actually, Jas hadn’t even noticed that Bree hadn’t used her entire name, until she mentioned it. She was quite used to ‘Jas’. “Please do,” she chuckled softly. “I mean, I call myself Jas too.” Oops.. Awkward moment again. “N-not that I talk to myself or anything.” Not that often, anyway. Although, it probably depended on what a person would call often. Could she really be blamed? She lived all by herself, it was bound to happen that she had deep conversations with her sofa and walls.
The queue moved forward again and Jas caught sight of the large boats. It wouldn’t be long now.. It was a relief that she’d now found a ‘ride-buddy’, but still, the raven woman feared what was going to happen. She exhaled a little nervously, just before her eyes found Bree’s again. “Sorry, I’m.. I’m a little nervous, I guess.”

"Exactly!" the sprite agreed. Oh, god, this was awesome. She'd finally found someone who shared her views on this place! Brent would have simply called her a chicken. She didn't know about Chase. But, oh gads, this was great! She totally was not being a chicken if there was someone that agreed with her, surely! "I guess it's just something to do with having some kind of death wish?" True. Those rides could probably kill a person...somehow. She knew she'd probably die.
She just smiled softly as Jasmine accepted her compliment. Sometimes it was just horrible having a compliment shoved back in your face. Of course, Bree only ever did that if it was something that just wasn't true. And that she was certain wasn't true. However, the comment about 'Bree' being an original name... that was true. Different to all her school friends' "Sarah"s and "Jessica"s. So what if it was a kind of cheese? Bree liked her name. "Thank you," she replied, pushing her windswept hair behind one ear. "It's... different, I'll give it that."
She nodded when Jasmine told her that she hadn't been in Honey Tree long, either. Three weeks? Ah. Bree had been there a little longer than that. "It's a month for me," she said. "I opened up a florist here, and then got a little apartment." God, though, Rent was expensive. Seriously, she needed to remember to have a conversation with her landlord about that. He was reasonable. Maybe he could get him to lower the rent slightly, if she was nice? ...Yeah, maybe not. "And, yeah. I live by myself. Unless my pet hamster counts. You?"
She snickered, with a dismissive flap of her hand as Jas started tripping over herself. "Relax, Talking to yourself is good sometimes." Oh god, did she really just say that? ...Yup. Bree kind of talked to herself a lot. Maybe that came with the depression, the little mental arguments she had with herself...but still. Sometimes it was nice. "Who's to judge if you talk to yourself? Not me, I do it a lot." So she was basically admitting madness. Well, with friends like Brent, it was only expected that Bree was to be a little crazy.
Nervous. Bree was too, if she was totally honest. The boats looked kind of big and really scary. She'd found someone to ride with, of course, but still. She nodded in agreement. "Yeah, me too." she said, fiddling with her nails slightly. "It looks kind of..dangerous?"

Bree had a good point. And if the ride didn’t actually kill a person, it’d make sure this person would die of embarrassment, because they’d probably throw up or look ridiculous on the picture that was always secretly taken somewhere along the ride; another thing Jas hated. Didn’t they need permission to take your photo, or did you somehow agree to that by getting into the ride or something? Either way, it all sounded like a terrible experience.
Jasmine gave a little nod. Pet hamsters did count, if it were up to her. Any living creature counted. Jas had considered getting herself a pet as well. A dog, she’d prefer, a lovely companion and a cure for the loneliness she often experience. It was also said that dogs made people connect. You know, fellow dog owners had one common ground at least; they all loved dogs. But having a dog also meant she’d have to leave her house late in the evening to walk with the animal and currently, her anxiety didn’t allow that; it really wasn’t a good idea to stroll along in the darkness of night. A cat, maybe. The young woman shrugged lightly at her own thoughts, until she realized she hadn’t yet answered Bree’s question. “Uhm.. No, on my own. It’s really.. quiet.” That was just another way of saying it was lonely, wasn’t it? A softer, less awkward way.
It was somehow a relief to have Bree admit she, too, talked to herself from time to time. “Yay,” Jas said softly, but a smile played on her lips. “Join the crazy club.” A little giggle escaped her lips. It was best to make fun of yourself in such a situation, wasn’t it? Better than have anyone else do it, anyway. It felt less embarrassing, even if just a little bit.
Was it still possible to sneak out? Although, really, that would be taking the easy way out and Jas had just sort of promised herself not to do that. It also seemed that her nervousness was contagious, because Bree seemed somewhat on edge as well. So, instead of acting like a little child, Jasmine decided to try a different technique. “Hey, it’ll probably be fun. Look.” She quickly gestured towards the other side of the ride, where the people were getting off the boats. Sure, they were soaked, but also laughing at the top of their lungs. That was somehow encouraging. And some encouragement was needed, because the people in front of them already got into a boat. Jas felt her heart skip a beat when one seat in the boat stayed empty and the person managing the ride gazed at her. “W-we want to go together,” the dark-haired woman quickly said as she gestured towards Bree, and showed a small smile. Apparently, that was enough of an excuse, because the man smiled back and the boat went off.
Relief took over for just a second, until, in the near distance, the next empty boat came drifting closer.

So the water sprite couldn't help but notice that the line was getting shorter and shorter with ever minute that went by. God. Why was she so nervous about this? It was a water ride. Her own element. Maybe it was just the fact that there was mechanics involved? Gads. Most probably. Oh, well. But still. She couldn't shake the feeling that something bad would happen. Even with her 'ride buddy'.
Oh. Speaking of Jas, it took Bree a moment to register that she'd replied to her question. She nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it gets kind of quiet round my place too," she concurred. Unless, of course, she had a friend over. It was still relatively civilised when someone like Chase came over, although slightly less quiet. But the only other variable was Brent, and Jesus, was he loud. She snickered quietly to herself. She couldn't remember the last normal conversation they'd had, unless the coffee shop counted.
"I'm pretty sure I joined the crazy club a while ago~" she laughed lightly, pushing her hands in her pockets and nodding. She'd been normal before she met everyone she currently knew, she was certain. Just average. Well, maybe less. If she were average, the other girls at school wouldn't have... done what they did. No. She wasn't going to think about that now. She was supposed to be out having fun.
The crowd getting off the boats did look happy. And they were soaked. God. That looked like so much fun. Why was Bree getting so worked up? It was just water. She loved it, it was her own fricking element, for crying out loud. She could do this! Couldn't she? Not on her own though. Not happening. When Jas told the guy operating the ride that the pair were riding together, she nodded eagerly in agreement. No way was she getting on this death trap by herself. No freaking way.
So she was feeling a mix of nerves and relief when she saw the empty boat approaching. Relief because she didn't have to ride on her own. Nerves for... well, an obvious reason. Rides were scary. Bree was totally not a wimp at all. No way. Nope. Bree was the personification of bravery. At least, that was what she thought when the boat actually arrived, and she hopped in almost without a backward glance. She held out a hand to Jas, smiling softly, kind of nervously. "You comin'?"

The empty boat slowly drifting in closer was one of the scariest things Jasmine had seen today. Damn it, she was such a wimp! Had she been alone, she surely would’ve scolded at herself for her cowardice, but since she was in the presence of a lot of people, she had to keep it all inside her head. For as long as possibly, her dark eyes avoided the boat, until it was right in front of her. She could still run now, but it was clear that Bree didn’t plan to. The blonde jumped into the ride with excitement, fearless, looking forward to it. Again, Jasmine looked at the group of people on the other side of the ride. They’d enjoyed themselves, then why couldn’t she. And as Bree held out her hand, Jas could nearly feel invisible hands pushing her forwards.
Subconsciously, the dark-haired girl squeezed the blonde’s hand as she put one foot into the boat. The thing wobbled madly in the water and Jas struggled to keep her balance. It would’ve been typical her, had she fallen flat on her face at the spot, but luckily, it seemed God saved her from that. A bit instable, but without tumbling over, she made her way over to the other side of the boat and took the seat furthest away from where people boarded. That somehow seemed safest, although the girl might chance her mind about that along the ride.
Still a bit nervous, Jasmine smiled at Bree. “Here we go,” she said softly. As she looked around herself for a seatbelt of some sort, she found there was no such thing on this ride. First, her heart skipped a beat; no seatbelts on a ride? But then, she breathed a light sigh. If the ride had no seatbelt, it couldn’t possibly be that dangerous. It probably hadn’t even happened that someone fell out of the boat before. The others took their seats as well, happily laughing and chatting as they did so. Clearly, Jasmine was the only one nervous about this.
With a little jolt, the boat started to move. It instantly started to spin as it drifted off from the port and Jasmine couldn’t stop herself from staring ahead. As far as she could see, it seemed a rather calm stream, but just as that thought had entered her mind, the boat rocked and a large amount of water was dumped inside of it, leaving the young lady to squeak loudly.
