[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] note: it's spanish. alec is a dolt. It had all started as a remedy for her boredom. It was noon on a Saturday, no one could do anything and she was stuck at home. The only natural thing was to google a list of remedies for the situation. The first response was a list of a hundred items and the rules were simple. It was a scavenger hunt. Its purpose was to keep you as occupied as possible and most of the things on the list could be found in your average town. Alec had read the first five before she printed it, slipped on shoes, and ran out the door.
The list wasn’t overly simple. Some of the numbers were weird and strange and had answers she certainly wasn‘t expecting. Like number eleven: find a place where you can skip and slide. The park didn’t even come into mind until she’d paced on the opposite side of the street for about ten minutes. She was glad she checked before she actually went down the slide, though. A grown woman at a kid’s playground? Not something people saw every day.
The current number -- fifty-three -- required her to translate the actual line. She could use google for that, too, but it would be no fun. Eyeballing the language just made her scratch her head and she currently thought it was a Romance language. Alec still remembered a little from her high school French class and recognized a word. Not that a word narrowed down her actual clue any more.
Alec thought she was lucky to find a Latin to English dictionary. Similar, but not close. She tried Italian next and, finally French. It didn’t look Spanish and didn’t want to try; too many languages, too little time. Her brain was just a tad frazzled, which probably prompted her into the next phase of the plan.
Otherwise known as asking random people in the library if they recognized this language.
At first no one did; some suggested various Latin based languages based on what little they knew of another, but no one could actually help. Several people suggested it was Spanish without much conviction or confidence, and Alec told herself she'd at least check since so many had that suspicion. Even one of the ladies on staff couldn’t help, though she was willing to look it up or help her find a book to do so. Alec just thanked her and moved on as quickly as possible.
Only a little frustrated and more than a little discouraged, she plopped down in one of the chairs and promptly began moving around to get comfortable on it. She might have to skip this one, but that wouldn’t be good. Some of the numbers went back and referenced to the previous items. If they decided to make one of the last ones a reference to number fifty-three, she would not be happy. She stared at the paper a little longer -- her eyes automatically drawn to the highlighted rule fifty-three, since that made it easier to ask people if they knew what it meant -- and decided she’d try once more and if she couldn’t get it, would go on the internet.
Good plan. Best plan.
But, before, there was one person she’d been meaning to ask. A bartender that Alec had talked to a few times and, well, probably wouldn’t know the answer but it was worth a shot. Trying not to show any of her frustration, she walked up and tried her best at making a smile. “Hey. You’re Lily, right? You work at the bar. I’m Alec. You probably don’t remember me,” she stated. “I was wondering if you could do me a bit of a favor? Nothing big. I just need to know if you know what that,” she presented the paper and pointed to the highlighted phrase 'Felicitaciones, usted sabe cómo usar un traductor! Ahora ve hacia el siguiente número', “means. Or at least what language it is.” words: 663 - tags: lily - outfit: [URL=http://www.polyvore.com/feeling_just_little_blue/set?id=58065071#stream_box ]link |

Having finally managed to get some free time away from the house and work, Lily had come to the library. Yet it still felt like work. Considering she was looking for things about trying to control powers, she wasn’t exactly enjoying herself like usual. There was still a little bit of excitement about if she could find anything out. Considering her twin siblings weren’t fully in control of their powers yet, Lily was determined to find something that might help them control them. Seeing as she had little to no help with her own, she wanted to make sure that they got as much as possible. Since it was such a weird and touchy subject with some people, she had decided not to ask for help. Which in turn, made the job a little bit harder. She had some idea of where to look, but they hadn’t been very successful. Yet she still didn’t want to ask for help. The librarians’ information and reactions would probably be less helpful anyway. Not to mention she would be treated like a weirdo if she ever stepped into the library again. Lily flipped through another book and pushed it back in the shelf. Sighing, she decided to try another shelf.
Pacing up and down the aisle until she got to another section which looked like it could work. Surely someone in this town would have some information on it? She had met a few people who’s families had lived in this town for generations, so Lily thought that there should be some sort of record on it. This was becoming more mind numbing by the second. At the rate she was going, it looked like there weren’t any books for it and she would have to try and describe what she did to them. She’d been doing that so far and they had managed pretty good control, but there were still flaws. They were still flaming out a bit every so often and the power ranged. If Lily didn’t find something out sooner or later, it might be too late. And she really didn’t want to find out what that entitled.
Biting on her lip as she flicked through some more books, Lily moved slowly down the bookcase. There was nothing here. Absolutely nothing. Crouching down, she looked at the bottom shelf. It was a long shot and in the back of her mind, she knew there would be nothing here. There wasn’t. Lily stood up and took one last glance along bookshelf before moving away. That was it. She was done. She’d been here for an hour already and hadn’t managed to find anything worth trying. Her best bet was to find someone who had control over their powers to try and help here. Then a book on the opposite shelf caught her attention. It was thick and had some very interesting looking patterns on it. It definitely stood out from the other ones and wasn’t going to be about anything normal she could tell. Lily pulled it out with both hands, letting out a small noise in surprise at how heavy it was. “Jeez.” Walking over to an empty table, Lily put it down on the table as lightly as she could. Sitting down in the empty seat, Lily held her breath as she looked across the front cover. Her expression changed into that of confusion. There was no title. It was completely blank on the front cover, apart from a few more pieces of detailing. What sort of book at she found?
Her discovery was put to one side as a voice started talking to her. Lily looked at up, looking straight at the chest of a woman. While she all for women’s breasts, it was clear that she shouldn’t be concentrating on that at the moment. She stood up when it was clear they were going to engage in some sort of conversation. Taking a good look at the female’s face, Lily soon recognised her. A small smile took on her face. “I remember you. You were the person who told a guy hitting on you to push off and leave you alone.” Lily chuckled at the memory. It was quite funny seeing as the guy had had a few drinks already. She was brought back to the real world when Alec placed a piece of paper in front of her and asked if she knew what it was. Lily looked at the piece of paper, staring at it as she read it a few times over. If she wasn’t mistaken, a few of the words reminded her of Spanish. It had been a while since she had spoke the language or learned anything about it, but she recognised a few of the words. “I think it’s Spanish. Though I’m not too sure what it says.” She said, biting the inside of her cheek. “Maybe try a Spanish to English dictionary?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] note: none. It was glad that display of her anger was amusing and remembered. Of course, being hit on wasn't completely uncommon for Alec; it seemed the whole point of going out to club was to meet people. That guy, though. Polite rejection wasn't suited for someone who strolled over and just grabbed the closest butt to him. Thinking back on it, she was cruel, but the guy deserved it.
And well, she'd be lying if she said it wasn't a little bit funny.
"The guy had it coming," she responded, simply, and with poorly masked amusement in her voice. "I'm surprised you even noticed. I figured you'd get a lot of that." It was a bar, after all. Wasn't it common for people to have a little too much, think they're irresistible and try to hook up? Alec knew she'd done it a few times -- to her later horror -- and figured it was normal. Maybe people weren't so... blunt with their refusal of some advantages. Great, now she was going to worry about this next time she went out.
That was a worry for a later time. Or, if she had her way, tonight if she could find someone to go out with. Right now she had her list to get through. Another Spanish, though it didn't really surprise her. A lot of people had said that. With a sigh she pulled out a chair, sat down, and slid the paper around so she could read it.
"I was afraid you were going to say that. A lot of people have, but I don't think it would be that easy," she stated, but still pulled out her phone and after connecting to the internet and going to a translator, began typing. It couldn't hurt to try and, well, she wasn't going to try the dictionary stuff again. Took too long and the grammar was a pain to figure out. Or... was it that Spanish was easier and English was the messed up language? Alec couldn't tell.
Every few words she'd glance at the paper then at the bartender across from her. It seemed rude to sit here and not talk. Especially after asking for help and kind of starting a conversation. She paused a little longer in her typing to eye the book in front of the other woman. "So, I'm guessing you're off shift based on your reading material. Unless that's one big book about alcohol." Her brows furrowed as she noticed the front cover and its lack of content. Laughing weakly, Lily shrugged. “It was a slow night. I tend to remember people more when it is.” The more crowded it was in that place, the less likely she was to remember a face. The only way she could is if she talked to the person for a few minutes or they were one of the regulars. Most people didn’t seem to care whether or not she remembered them, as long as they got their nights drink. In fact, unless Lily was talking to them, she didn’t care whether they remembered her either. Though most people seemed to have the colour of her hair implanted in their minds and she had yet to make up her mind on whether or not that was a good thing. “We do. We tend to ignore it for the most part. Only if they start to get a little frisky each other we kick them out or if they’re being annoying to someone do we step it.” Lily pulled a face. There had been one or two accounts where people had gotten like that and they had to step in. Some people could have way too much in one night. They would call up a taxi, manage to find out where the person lived and get them home in roughly one piece. Whether they ended up sleeping on the doorstep wasn’t her problem.
“Why’s that?” With a quizzical expression on her face, Lily titled her head to the side a bit. “If a lot of people have said it, surely you should at least try it out.” It seemed like a logical step to take. If a lot of people had said that it might be Spanish, then what was holding her back? There was a small flare of curiosity in Lily’s chest to ask what Alec was doing. She slid back into her seat, resting her arms on top of the thick book. She hadn’t forgotten about it. When they had finished talking, Lily looked down at the book, taking her arms from it and brushing the cover a little bit. It was a little dusty which made her thing that it hadn’t been taken from the shelf for several months, or even years. She was about to flip to cover over when she heard Alec start speaking again. Lily raised her head in the females direction and laughed before sobering a little at her question. “I know it’s not about alcohol. I know enough about that to last me a lifetime.” She said, rolling her eyes. “Well I hoping that it’s got some information about a small project I’m doing. I haven’t been able to find anything about what I’m doing since I got in here and this seems to be my last hope.” Lily looked back down at the book and flipped open the first few pages. Quite a bit of dust flew out of the pages and Lily had to look away to stop herself from sneezing. “This thing must be old though.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] no note That made sense. If she were a bartender, she’d people-watch on slow nights. Alec suspected that they got some interesting characters at bars. It also made a lot of sense to kick people out who were a little… enthusiastic about their affections towards each other. While it was the only bar in town, she didn’t think many people would want to come back if people were occupying the pool table or something.
And the Spanish dilemma. “Well, some of the previous things on the list were difficult. I’m in the fifties now and it just seems… weird to put Spanish that far down the list. I mean, how many people speak Spanish now?” Her answer sounded a little hollow in her own ears, but there wasn’t a better way to describe it other than nagging doubt. She finished typing, pressed enter and set the phone down on the table.
The list could wait. She had an actual conversation with someone living right now. As long as she wasn’t bothering the bartender, then she’d stay and chat.
She smiled a little when Lily said she knew more about alcohol than she needed. That vanished when the woman opened the book and dust almost literally flew out of it. Alec’s eyes grew a little wider in disbelief and looked back and forth from the woman to the book. “I think that book is a little more than old,” she said in a pretty matter-of-fact way. The dust basically proved it.
There was a tickling in her nose and, to get away from the dust and avoid sneezing, leaned back in her seat a little. “What are you trying to research? Maybe I can help.” Alec didn’t know how much help she could be if Lily thought her answers were in a book that was probably last opened before both of them were born (and maybe even combined), but she was going to offer anyway. If she could use her time to help someone instead of doing a stupid “100 things to do when bored” list, then she was going to offer.

Lily quite liked the slow nights at the bar. It meant that she could watch and evaluate various people. She got to see what some people were like and who she should look out for if they caused any trouble. It also gave her the chance to talk to a few new people, introduce them to a few others and catch up with the regulars that came in. “I’m sure whoever made it would muddle a few things up, there are bound to be easier things on there. But there are a few people. I know they still teach in it various schools across Ireland and England. I think they might teach it across America too. I know a few words in Spanish still and that was a number of years ago.” She explained, a slightly annoyed tone took her voice near the end. She knew a few people that weren’t fluent in it, but were able to speak a few sentences at most. And she was pretty sure that they were still teaching it in some schools. It could be pretty useful in some cases. Especially if people ended doing whatever Alec was doing with the list she had.
Lily saw a flicker of a smile on the females face before the book opened and dust practically flew in every which way possible. “I think so too. It definitely hasn’t been recently published.” Lily muttered before letting out a cough and moved away a bit. How old was this book exactly? And when had it last been opened? Clearly it had gone unnoticed all these years and had only been moved around if the shelves got reshuffled. What the hell was in this thing anyway? Whatever it was would hopefully give Lily the answers she needed. Though the woman’s question stumped her for a few seconds. She knew this question was going to be brought up sooner or later. She was a little bit wary of answering it. Pushing the book out the way a little bit, she leaned forwards. “I’m trying to find out if there’s anyway I could help teach my twin siblings how to control their powers.” Lily started, her voice just loud enough for Alec to hear. “Seeing as I’m the only person they really know that had these sorts of things, I’ve sort of become their mentor. I didn’t know anyone when I was trying too, so it’s a bit difficult for me to pass it on to them. So I was searching for some information to help me.” It sounded a bit complicated, but it was the only way she could think of without going to someone else for help. Even then there was a risk of them not being able to help much.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] note: sorry for the wait. I had an annoyingly busy week. :c Oh great, now she had her acquaintance annoyed. But, then again, Alec did suppose that it was easy to misinterpret what she was meaning. She opened her mouth, about to explain, but then closed it and figured that offering an explanation would be of no use. If offence was taken, it was taken, and the best thing to do was just to move on and, hopefully, forget.
Not that it was always easy, but she hoped it was possible.
She listened intently, brows raising in some surprise then lowering in thought. There was no way for Alec to help in teaching, but she could help with the looking for information part. Maybe. If there were any records written that were helpful and they were able to find. For whatever reason, Alec thought that chance would be thin. From her minor experience with sprites and other non-human creatures, their powers manifested in different ways.
It sounded like Lily needed help, though, and needed it before something bad happened to someone. As useful and mysterious as their abilities could be, they were also dangerous when unable to be controlled. She began to worry her bottom lip, thoughts growing darker, and absently began tapping her fingers.
That was what ripped her away from her thoughts. She looked at her hand, annoyed that she had done that because she disliked the sound, and looked back to the large book. Maybe it was useful. Its age and lack of title made it appear so.
Then again, it also made it look like the book was meant to be hidden and was brought from that hiding from whatever reason. Books, and knowledge, could be a dangerous thing.
She forced herself from those thoughts by checking her phone for the translation and scowled at it. Well, that was an entirely useless part of her list and directed the scowl, next, to the paper it was on. The action did what she wanted it to and when she looked back at Lily, she was considerably less broody.
"Have you thought about asking the library staff?," she responded, voice equally low, and all of a sudden Alec felt like a conspirator in some great plan. This was becoming a spy mission all of a sudden and she wasn't sure if she was amused or not. "If you don't want them to know, say it's for some college essay about fire or something. You look like you could be in college." words: 411 - tags: lily - outfit: [URL=http://www.polyvore.com/feeling_just_little_blue/set?id=58065071#stream_box ]link |

Glancing back up at Alec, Lily saw her mouth open for a second. She looked at the woman, eyebrow raised waiting for whatever wanted to come out her mouth. Nothing did so she looked back down at the book, dusting the page she was on a little. This book was probably her last hope anyway; she might as well make sure it was clean to some degree. Her eyes scanned down the page that she had flipped too. It looked like some sort of contents page. Nothing on it seemed to ring any sorts of big bells in her mind, but there were a few things that caught her attention. The small glimmer of hope that she’d felt earlier flickered a bit more as she then recognised a few names here. Maybe there was something relevant in this dusty old book. Lily would just have to flick to the relevant pages. And get a face full of dust while I’m at it. She thought sourly.
Looking back up at Alec’s question, Lily was forcing herself not to spout out a sarcastic or stupid remark. However, a small one managed to slip out before she could stop herself. “No, it never crossed my mind.” A small smile then glued itself to her face. “I don’t particularly want them knowing anything about it to be honest. I’ve searched basically the entire library and I haven’t found a single thing apart from this.” She pointed to the book she was holding before continuing. “I don’t think they could be of much help unless they’re a sprite that has the powers I need help with. And I don’t really want my powers or any hint of it being made knowledge to everyone I meet.” Lily explained, rolling her eyes a bit. Though she was slightly flattered by the possible compliment, she didn’t think the staff here would be much help. She didn’t exactly want everyone to know. There were times when she would keep her mouth shut about it. Unless she was directly asked the question, Lily wouldn’t mention it in passing. From what she remembered, from her family, only her parents and her siblings knew of her powers. If any other members knew then they had kept their mouth shut about it.
Lily finally looked back down at the book. Skimming over the contents page, she found a page that looked like it could be of some use. Keeping several page numbers in her mind, she flipped to the introduction. Better to read it just in case. Blowing the dust away that appeared when she did, Lily started reading. Her eyebrows furrowed and she bit the inside of her cheek as she read. Well there was certainly going to be interesting things in here. Flipping to the first page that she remembered of, Lily looked at the title before starting to read the first paragraph. “Alec? What are you exactly?” She asked, glancing up quickly. “Because, if you’ve got some sort of power, you might want to read this thing. It’s got some pretty damn interesting things in it.” It might not be exactly what she was looking for, but it had some things in it that she didn’t know before. True it might be pretty small stuff, the sort of things you learn when you have the powers, but it was useful. It did look like it could be useful for something.
