He spent a lot of his time surrounded by books - at work or at home, and even more of that time reading those books. He could read and reread as many books as he wanted, but there was the ocaissional urge to get something new to quench his literary taste buds. And if there was one place that he knew that was good for keeping books that were both the newest thing and interesting, it was Ink and Folly. He had stopped in there a few times, and every time he had been greeted by a smiling blonde and a much more timid looking brunette. They offered him the best books, but he often found that he didn't have enough time to really stay around there, or become a regular visitor. As much as he wanted that, he was just too busy.
But today he had been given a day off from work at the library, a new librarian had been employed and his rounds were suddenly cut shorter. He had more free time now and he was intending on using it well. His first stop was definitely going to be Ink and Folly.
Walking down the street, Gary adjusted the hat he wore on top of his scruffy hair. It was raining lightly, as it seemed to do quite often around here. He wondered if it was the water sprites doing as he turned a corner. His shoes scuffed the ground lightly as he he wandered through a few puddles idly. His pace was casual, and as he walked he let a ball of air roll in and out of his hand. It danced through his palm slowly, hugging his flesh as he made his journey. As he did every day, he had a smile on his face as he walked. Each of his footsteps were light, as if he was walking on air, and for a little while, he was. If he got bored of walking or wanted to avoid a particularly disgusting looking puddle he would wander right over it on the air he could push himself up on.
Eventually, however, he found his way to the shop he had been admiring for so long. Pushing the door open, and looking up at the bell above as it rang, he took a few steps forward. The carpet felt soft, and he smiled, placing his hands in his pocket. He walked towards the front desk, but he didn't see anyone around. He leaned forward and leaned his elbows onto the wood as he waited. Gary was a man that was patient and could wait for the workers here to be done with whatever it was they were doing.[/style] |

[/div] need a second to breathe, Alice had just recently added a few different things to the little courtyard out the back for new and old visitors to see. Instead of the small bonsai tree sitting in the middle, the young woman had made it grow and spread it branches in all different directions. Now, the branches created seats both high and low - high for the adventurous climbers hidden within a few of the customers, and lower ones for those whom either didn't want to climb, or were simply too old to try - as well as provided more shade than the previous tree that had sat in the corner of the coutyard. Alice had also created small paths set in stone - she moved them herself, and no doubt now had dirt on herself - and outlined it with small red and blue flowers. It still wasn't perfect, but then again change was never perfect. Standing inside the small store; Alice sighed and rubbed a dirty hand across the bridge of her nose, thus leaving a small smudge, and turned on her heels.
Practically skipping back over to the front desk, Alice removed the leather-bound book she kept all her creations out and picked out a small piece of soil from underneath her fingernails. Growing a white daisy from the soil, she placed it in the back of the book and began walking around the store all the while writing down her latest creation and ideas for her new one. She had been on a bit of a breakthrough when her ears picked up the light noise of the bell and her head sprung up from the pages. Upon seeing the male whom was a somewhat regular, Alice placed a small smile on her lips and looked down towards the floor. He was one of the regulars whom brought out the more timid side of Alice Mournet. More-so because he was incredibly handsome and Alice always stuttered a little whenever she spoke to him. Hence the reason the young woman would almost always push Melissa to the front desk to take care of him.
Placing the daisy on the page she was up to, Alice closed the book and stepped towards the male with a small smile painted across her features. "C-can I help y-you sir?" Her words were quiet, and her eyes left his features and planted themselves on the ground. Stuffing a hand in her pocket, Alice removed another small amount of soil and began to grow and wilt a small rose in the palm of her hand. She did this a few times before letting it remain as a fully opened rose and her eyes finally looked back up towards the male. notes: She's shy D:

He was used to dealing with the blonde that worked here, and as nice as Melissa was, and as friendly as they were even outside of work, the other worker always managed to catch his interest. He wasn't sure what it was about her, perhaps it was the mystery of barely being able to talk to her. Or maybe it was something else altogether. Whatever it was, he felt something within him want to pursue it. His smile became warm, and his hands moved to tap against the smooth top of the worktop he was leaning against. He hadn't been waiting for very long before she turned up, and he found himself unusually glad to see her.
At her question, the man leaned back, taking his elbows off of the worktop and he sighed breathlessly - as if he had been mulling over a serious decision and shrugged his shoulders. "Oh, you know, I wanna get some new books and I haven't been able to keep up with what's new. Usually I'll order what I want online but everything that gets delivered here always takes forever." Finding that he hadn't actually answered her question, he cleared his throat and waved a hand. "Erm, yeah. I was hoping to get some new books. Do you have any recommendations?" Asked the dark haired man, pushing back some of his hair behind his ear. He took his hat off, and flicked away some of the rain that had been hugging the brim. He aimed it away from the girl, and blew some air in the direction of the hat. To a stranger it might have looked like he was blowing air over a cup of hot tea or something like that. But if you looked closer, the material of the hat got lighter as he blew away the water. Once it was dry, he put it back on his head and turned his attention back to the employee of Ink and Folly.
"So, what have you got for me?" Gareth asked, smiling brightly in her direction. He found it easy to talk to her, and was enjoying, already, her company. He'd have to try and wiggle her out of that scared shell she seemed to have up around her around strangers. His eyes glittered as he looked at her, keeping his eyes masterfully trained on her own.[/style] |

[/div] need a second to breathe, Alice watched in awe as the male began to blow off the rain that had presented itself nicely on his hat. It made her imagine what both her own garden and the garden in the courtyard out the back would be like if someone began to allow petals to float about the air. Alice closed her eyes for a brief second and imagined herself spinning around and around in a circle as small petals from various flowers spun around her and danced through her arms; hugging her skin tightly. It wasn't until the male began to speak once more that Alice was pulled out of her little trance and looked down towards her palms. The rose had wilted once more and a small frown came to her face. "Bloom, my darling." She spoke within a whisper, before blowing on the flower lightly. It sprung back to life and Alice stepped towards the counter and placed it on the wooden benchtop before turning her attention back towards the other.
"W-Well... It really d-depends on what you're... What you're after." Turning on her heels slightly, Alice waved her hand over the shelves of books before getting a slight spark of confidence as her mind wandered to one book in particular. Reaching out, Alice grabbed the male's hand and pulled him towards one of the shelves which held fantasy novels. "This one is my new favourite. It's the one that I've just finished reading it. It's about an angel that just so happens to fall from a cloud. He turns human as soon as he hits the ground, but there is something about him that makes him..." Pausing, Alice dropped the male's hand and quickly placed the book back on the shelf. Looking down towards the floor, the young woman shook her head and sighed slightly. "I'm... I'm sorry. I d-don't know what c-came over, came over me."
Taking a dying flower from her pocket, Alice began to bring it back to it's full beauty very slowly before looking back up towards the male and offering him a small smile. "I d-don't even know what types of books you l-like." [/b] A small laugh followed her words as she pushed the flower towards him. "An apology f-for before." [/div] notes: She's shy D:

He caught a lot of movements of people because he was unsure of looking into a person's eyes. Through this he found it easy to watch people's mannerisms. What they did with their hands and what they did with what it was that they held. Once the hat was back on top of his dark hair, he was watching the employee of the quaint bookshop with a curious smile on his face. He hadn't seen many people carrying flowers around, and he felt almost guilty for thinking that she was an Earth Sprite just because she had a flower. He was about to brush the thoughts off when brought the flower back to a wonderful bloom. He knew that that was not a trick, nor was it something that he wasn't impressed by. He smiled and picked up the rose as it was placed down on the counter. "That was very clever," said the man to the timid worker. "I take it you're an Earth Sprite?" Gareth asked, looking from the flower to the nose of the girl. He was uncomfortable looking at eyes, and knew that looking at a nose was 'close enough'. He smiled and looked back down to the rose he had picked up, before placing it down again. Gary had realised that it wasn't his to play with, and that for all he knew she could get quite annoyed with him for picking it up. But he had made sure to be gentle with it so he hoped that that counted for something.
"Something that isn't very po-" The dark haired man was cut off by the grabbing of his hand. Personal contact and Gary didn't go hand in hand, if you'll excuse the pun. He took a second to steady himself, and it was a second wasted, because he was soon dragged over to a shelf nearby. He had to hold onto his hat to ensure that it hadn't been blown away. Not that he couldn't get it back. He stood beside the smaller of the two and looked at the shelves. He recognised some of the titles, both from the library and from his own home, and he assumed that they were standing beside the fantasy shelves. His thoughts were confirmed by a sign nearby that had 'FANTASY' written on it. He smiled a little, and turned his head down as he was told about a particular book. He rose his eyebrows, deciding it was best to let his hand be held by the employee. He wasn't going to upset her by tugging his hand away, no no, that would be rude. And Gary refused to be rude, even if the sensation of someone else's flesh on his own was so alien. Instead he listened to her talking, smiling politely as she told him about one of the books. "Ooh? That does sound interesting! Do you have any hardback copies in?" Asked the Air Sprite, looking at the shelves in case there was anything else that also caught his eye. Honestly sometimes Gary would go home with a book, very excited to read it but once he was home he would discover that he already had the book, and would donate whatever he had just bought to the library instead. It was a nice cycle, and sometimes he bought books solely for the library. Either out of the funding or his own money.
It was then that he was torn from his thoughts when the young woman yanked her hands away from his as if he had been burning her. He looked to her with concern etched all over his featuers. "Don't worry about it," Gareth offered a comforting smile, before she continued, She spoke and his smile grew. "I'm a librarian, I'm yet to find a book that I don't like." He said, his eyes looking upwards and slowly rolling down as he was offered a flower. He smiled, grazing her fingers with his own as he took it from her. He held it between both of his pointing fingers, and when he slowly drew his fingers away, leaving the flower suspended in the air, he slowly entered it into a twirl. "Aw, thank you. I think it's very pretty." He said, before he picked up the flower from the air, and tucked it into one of the button holes of his jacket. "I'm Gary," he said softly, finding that he might as well have introduced himself. Their conversation had wavered from finding books, it seemed, and he supposed he was okay with that.[/style] |

[/div] need a second to breathe, Alice had never known herself to stutter. Infact, she loved the way she was able to talk in a proper way and not have any speech impediments. However while she was talking to this male in particular, several things were going on. Her voice came out in a soft tone with stutters in almost every single word. When he talked, she could only concentrate on his voice and her mind automatically shut off everything else. What was it about this male - this air sprite - that made her body do so much without her telling it to do so? "Y-yes. An Earth... Earth Sprite." Her eyes moved to the rose she had placed on the counter and watched as it moved into his hands. A light smile came to her face and she wondered why he had put it back down after only holding it for a brief second. Alice loved it when people admired her work. Especially roses. Her mother said that she always had a feeling that something would happen with the rose flower thus she put it as her daughter's middle name.
After looking back down towards the floor when the pair had moved, Alice listened to the other's words about the book she had suggested and smiled slightly as she lifted her head. "H-hardback copies? W-We should." The young woman moved the ladder over before climbing a few rungs and began to search the top shelf where they usually kept the rest of the books. Only one book at a time was placed on display and as that sold out either herself or Melissa would walk passed and move another down. Finding a hardback copy, Alice lightly traced her fingers over the large title before handing it down towards the male. "W-without you. If-if it's n-not your favourite by the t-time you finish... You're-You're next b-book's free." Laughing a little, Alice hugged the side of the ladder before slowly climbing back down.
As the other spoke about being a librarian, Alice's nerves suddenly washed away. He was the first male she knew - besides Sebastian - whom enjoyed reading. "You're a librarian?" Her voice was now it's normal tone and her stutters were completely gone. A rather large smile spread across her face and she soon placed a look of amazement as she watched the flower spin in mid air. He was the first male to actually speak anything about a flower she had grown herself and it sent a small blush up against her cheeks. "I'm Alice. It's nice to meet you Gary." Extending her arm, Alice waited to shake the other's hand before retracting it back and letting it fall limp against her side. She felt like she owed him something for the way she acted before, however she just didn't know what.
"I'm sorry, we are getting off topic... Is there any particular genre that tickles your fancy at the moment?" Alice tilted her head to the side slightly and offered Gary a small smile. If he thought the flower alone was pretty, she would love to see his reaction if she got the chance to show him the bookstore garden. notes: Yay for confidence! He was always fascinated by the other elemental controllers. He was a little bit intimidated by the Fire Sprites, and the Water Sprites seemed so welcoming. And Earth Sprites? A wonderful combination of beauty and power. "Oooh. I am so jealous. I would love to be able to, you know, show case what I can do." Said Gary, feeling a little jealous. Anything he could do never really lasted, nor was it visble to anyone with an untrained eye. He could see how she made flowers bloom and how water sprites sent the rain bottling around the room. "I can hold things within a ball of air but it isn't the same, you know?" Gareth chuckled almost sadly. He brushed it off though and decided to just enjoy the company of the bookstore worker. She was a nice enough girl and it was nice to see a different face here.
The Air Sprite leaned against the shellves very gently as he watched the girl climb the ladder. He kept his eyes trained on her face, kowing that here could be some worry about whether or not he'd take a glance up her dress, but he wasn't that typee of person. His brother on the other hand was a different story but he wasn't here. Instead Gary tilted his head back, and made sure to keep the ladder steady with his free hand. He didn't want to witness the dark haired girl taking any nasty tumbles. When she came back down, he took the book from her gently and flipped it over. He read the blurb and smiled. "This looks great! Thank you." Gary held the book in his hand and let his other hand fall from the ladder. She was down safely now so there was no need to continue to hold it steady.
Gary's smile became soft as the girl, now introducing herself to him as Alice, gained some confidence. "Yeah. I seem to be the only one dedicated to the job, but it's still enjoyable, you know." Explained the dark haired man, lifting his fingers to rub at his chin a little bit. His mind was back in the library, and he shook his head. "We've actually got some kids in on work experience. They seem to think 'throw the book' is a good game." Gary shook his head. He couldn't count how many times he had caught books in the air either with his powers or a surprising bound into the air. He turned back to Alice as the two of them returned to talking. He lifted his hand to take hers before she dropped it. His smile became a little confused, but it didn't leave his face regardless. "It's very nice to meet you too, Alice." Said Gary, falling quiet after a moment or two.
Soon though, the man was asked another question and he had to think about it for a couple of minutes. "Personally I'd like to get into some really cool dystopian stories. Do you know if you have any of those?" Asked Gary brightly. It was a strange order to ask for, but he had been intending on getting into some more surreal types of books and a lot of people online had suggested to him some dystopians. He was looking forward to burying his nose in them.[/style] |

[/div] need a second to breathe, Alice smiled a little as Gary spoke of him being jealous of her element. Deep inside, the young woman was jealous of everyone else's element but her own. Sure, she could grow flowers... But what else was there? It wasn't like she could create the flower then burst it into a beautiful flame. Nor could she scrunch up her nose and send the petals blasting in every direction with a puff of air. No. She could just make the flower grow. "To be perfectly honest, I would have prefered you... An air sprite to be standing next to me as I fell into the pond a few weeks ago. Instead of a Trickster I know whom remained hidden by a tree and laughed instead of fetching a towel like a good friend." Shrugging, she laughed a little and pointed towards his hat. "I mean, did you even notice how fast you blew off those tiny drops of water? I would have been dry in no time!"
After climbing the ladder and coming back down once again, Alice had watched as Gary turned the book over in his hands. She didn't know whether to be nervous or happy. She didn't know if his reaction would be good or bad. However relief soon filled her features as he thanked her. "Not a problem. It's part of my job description. But then again, it's part of yours too." A small, rather nervous laugh came out. Alice usually laughed at her own little jokes, however if she was around someone new her laugh would be shaking and filled with nerves. It was a side effect of not knowing how they would react to her laughing at her own small jokes. Shaking her head slightly, the young woman listened to the other's words about the kids on work experience.
"If you see a few children tied up to a wall with vines... I promise I didn't do it." Another small laugh followed by a rather large smile followed Alice's words as she pictured doing such. The children would learn to respect the books, Gareth would gain a bit of peace and quiet as he didn't have to run around the library, and Alice would be able to spend time in her tied-for-second favourite place - her first being her own garden and her other second being her work. When the male spoke her name, Alice was knocked out of her little thought bubble and a light smile lit up her face. For some reason, when he spoke her name it was just... Different. Different to the way Mel said her name, and different to the way she had heard anyone else speak her name before. Thinking nothing of it, Alice turned her attention back towards Gary as he answered her question.
"Well, it depends. Were you after classics? Old stories? New stories? There was one that just recently came out... Wither I believe it's called. Basically they have tried to genetically engineer a humanity which has been cured from all diseases and defects. However this then turns upside down when a virus spreads which has all females killed by age twenty and males by twenty-five... I won't go into too much details though." That's what Alice loved to do. Give a giant, juicy hook to someone and let them figure out the rest of the story by themselves. It usually worked out for the best in the past, and she hoped it would work this time as well. "If you like that one and the other I told you about... I'll let you recommend a few to me." Grinning from ear to ear, Alice tilted her head to the side slightly and waited for a response. notes: Alice on the inside: I'll tie up the kids and give us time to talk. :3

He was a little unsettled to know that she had fallen somewhere and no one had offered to help her, but he supposed he couldn't do anything about it now. He was the type of man that still believed that everyone in the world was honest working people that would stop and help a young girl if she fell over. He knew he would have. Instead, the dark haired man shook his head a little. "Alice, if I was there you wouldn't have fallen," he promised her, smiling at the employee of the quaint little shop. He had meant by that that he would have made sure she wouldn't have tripped over anything or taken a nasty tumble. He would have done what he could to stop that from happening, mostly because he was a good guy. And if she had fallen, he would have tried to cushion her fall with some air, or use that same air to dry her off, as she had said. Gary looked to his hat as he noticed that she was pointing at it. He loved to wear his hats, especially if they were going to keep his messy hair tamed. Or at least aid in that. He smiled brightly. "Why didn't that Trickster offer any help?" Asked Gareth, a little curious to hear why this 'friend' hadn't offered any help. He decided not to mull it over, she was okay, after all.
The Air Sprite's smile became crooked as she laughed at what she had said. He joined in with a light tinkling of a laugh, it wasn't overly funny but it was nice to see that the service here was making an effort to get to know him. Granted, the blonde that worked here hadn't offered as much of a personal service but he hadn't really tried. Mostly because he was in a rush half of the time he came in here. He'd have to suggest a delivery system, then perhaps he could order books in bulk for the library instead of getting them all from the internet. "Heh heh, well I suppose it is. Though I'm more in charge of looking after the books, and then making sure we have popular stock." Explained Gary, unaware that he was probably boring her with his job description. "I mean, that gives me more reason to get back here and keep buying books. Usually what I like will go up on the shelves. I know that sounds a little vain but we have a librarian's pick section." Laughed Gary, rubbing at the back of his head. The other librarian's weren't as enthusiastic about that idea as the Air Sprite had been, which was why most of what he read was on display there. A lot of people seemed to like that feature and often browsed what he had put up. That made him happy.
Another laugh followed as Alice spoke. She seemed to have a good sense of humour, he liked that about people. It made them much easier to talk to. He lifted a finger and tapped the side of his nose, winking at the short haired woman in the process. "Sure, sure. And if you see them floating above the bookshelves that was most definitely not me." Said the man, chuckling softly. Sometimes he would have loved to have blown the kids away. They weren't at all interested in the library and clearly thought it was just something to do while they waited for the two weeks of work experience to be over. He shook his head, deciding it would do no harm to exchange casual chatter. Granted, it was barely his division but he liked this girl. "Honestly, I would love to kick them out. They'll just get a strongly worded phonecall to their headmaster or something," shrugged the man, shaking his head. He wasn't the type that liked lots of confrontation, and he was sure that the students wouldn't take on board anything that he said.
Gary's eyes lit up at the mention of 'Wither'. It sounded amazing. "That sounds like just what I'm looking for. Is there any chance of getting a few copies? I know it would do well in the library," said Gary, eyes glittering. He loved the sound of the book she had offered up to him. But then it was his turn to think of some books that she might have liked. He was quiet for a long time, in deep thought about what books he had read that might have been appealing to her. Eventually, he did think one up. "Ooh, you might like The Demon's Lexicon. It's part of a 'The Demon's' series. Basically, these two brothers are being chased by magicians, and they run into two strangers whom they end up helping. Then, at the end, a huge discovery is made! Then you need to get into the next book but," Gary held a hand over his heart. "It really hits home." He petted his chest for a moment, before smiling at Alice.[/style] |
